The Minnesota State Fair is located in the Twin City suburb of Falcon Heights, which is in spitting distance of St. Paul and close to Minneapolis. It’s been around since 1854–five years before Minnesota became a state–and is second only to the Texas State Fair in terms of attendance. The fair always lasts for the two weeks before Labor Day, and this year it runs from August 23 to September 3. 3

Minnesota Territory first held a Territorial Fair in 1854, although the first Minnesota State Fair didn’t occur until 1859, the year after statehood. Since then, the fair has run annually except for five different years. In 1861 and 1862, the fair was not held because of the Civil War and the Dakota War of 1862. Scheduling issues between the fair and the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois caused the 1893 show to be canceled. The fair again closed because of war in 1945, as fuel was in short supply. It was again closed in 1946 because of an outbreak of polio. 4

There are a mind-boggling number of fun competitions held each year at the fair. Minnesota Fair events in this category include a talent show, live stock shows of every variety, needlework and canning competitions. The Ag-Hort-Bee is another event that features competitions in different categories such as farm crops, vegetable and potatoes and flowers. This is a great event for the farming community as well as for visitors who want to learn more about their communities talents. 5

Food on a stick. The Minnesota State Fair is a feast of flavors, and an awful lot of them come on a stick. Local favorites include the Pronto Pup, the pork chop on a stick, chocolate-covered cheesecake on a stick, and the insanely decadent fried candy bar on a stick. For the adventurous, there’s deep fried alligator. In 2006, a St. Paul Pioneer Press reporter went on a 12 day diet where he only ate fair food on a stick. 6
