During his CES 2008 keynote, Bill Gates announced that Microsoft Silverlight will drive the online video for the site. As announced before, NBC will stream 2,200 hours of live coverage — as many as 30 simultaneous live feeds — and make more than 3,000 hours available on demand. “Events like this in the broadcast format… are not as satisfying.” In a video, Bob Costas showed a quick preview of the Silverlight service with Olympics video, which showed a quad split of four screens of video playing at once. Costas called it the “most comprehensive and ambitious” live broadband production ever. 1
Powered by Wavexpress’ TVTonic Internet video service and client, NBC Olympics on the Go will allow owners of Media-Center-capable Windows Vista PCs (that’s Home Premium and Ultimate) to download “up-to-HD” coverage on a sport-by-sport basis. Users can chose from a number of channels in Wavexpress’ TVTonic client that NBC’s coverage of the Beijing Games will be categorized into, and the NBC Olympics on the Go client will be able to access event coverage roughly 12 hours after an event ends. Ars Technica confirmed with Wavexpress that users will not be able to keep downloaded coverage indefinitely, though videos will remain playable at least for the duration of the games. 2

As Bill Gates announced at CES back in January, all video at the NBC Olympics site requires Silverlight, Microsoft’s rich web application and video streaming technology that competes with Adobe’s market-dominant Flash. Microsoft’s been pushing Silverlight pretty hard lately, and if a lot of consumers don’t have a reason to install it yet, the Beijing Games in August should be a good a reason as any. 3
NBC is targeting three of the richest online advertising verticals: casual gaming, online video and mobile. Let’s just hope that NBC can handle the traffic and the loads - the Olympic coverage could prove a good test for all online video content creators. 4
It’s never been easy for fans of sports such as archery and field hockey during the Olympics?the TV networks just didn’t give such niche sports the prime-time love showered on swimming, gymnastics and other popular events. But this time around, NBC has been making much of its plan to stream more than 2200 hours of live events via its Web site, and provide 3000 additional hours of on-demand video during the Beijing Games beginning on Friday, Aug. 8. 5
Fortunately, NBC has promised that many of the top events will be aired live, with a couple hour tape-delay for West Coast folks, according to Show Tracker. But this Olympics offers fans more options and flexibility, thanks to the Internet. Via NBC’s Olympics website, U.S. residents can watch more live video online than ever before — 2,200 hours across 25 events. 6
Creating a high-bandwidth, high-performance connection between Beijing and NBC studios in New York and Los Angeles to give shot selectors and editors in the United States the ability to edit video as it is being captured in Beijing. Providing the quality of service (QoS) required to assign priority to real-time Olympic Games video footage over the trans-ocean network. Encoding and transmitting low-resolution (low-res) video from Olympic venues for broadband viewing. Low-res video uses far less bandwidth, which enables NBC to provide Internet coverage of more Olympic sports. Using a single, converged IP infrastructure for a wide spectrum of services ranging from the video delivery to data-intensive logistics applications. 7
Are NBC and its affiliates somehow convinced that a shut-off of live broadcasts over the Web will drive those viewers to turn on their televisions - if they even have them within reasonable distance - to continue consuming the network?s feed? A very peculiar assessment of viewers? 8
NBC, “America’s Olympic Network,” owns the exclusive U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games, television’s most powerful property, through 2012, which includes Beijing in 2008, Vancouver in 2010 and London in 2012. From August 8-24, 2008 NBC Universal will present an unprecedented 3,600 hours of coverage, highlighted by NBC in primetime with live swimming, gymnastics and beach volleyball. In August 2004, 203 million viewers watched s the networks of NBC Universal — NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Bravo, Telemundo, and NBC’s HD affiliates — offered a then record 1,210 hours of Olympic coverage from Athens. 9
