Tyra Banks is once again making television history by featuring a different sort of contestant on America’s Next Top Model. This season will feature one contestant who is truly breaking barriers-she is a transsexual. 2
LOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - America’s Next Top Model is making history again - last season, the show picked it’s first plus size winner, and this season the show will have its first transgendered contestant. Isis, 22, is a pre-op transgender model who was born a male, but says she was “born in the wrong body” and always felt like a female. Isis was featured as an extra model for the homeless photo shoot last season, and host and creator Tyra Banks encouraged her to try out for the following season. The 11th season of the hit reality show premieres on the CW on September 3 at 8 p.m. 1

Yesterday, the CW announced the finalists for cycle 11 of America’s Next Top Model. Of the 14 contestants competing this season, most are 19-year-old college students. One model, in particular, stands apart from the other girls she is competing against. Isis, a 22-year-old who works for a non-profit organization, is the show’s first transgendered contestant. On the heels of Top Model’s first plus size winner, it seems the show is continuing to push boundaries and give more people the opportunity to be successful in the fashion world. 3
ldquo;Previous twists in past ANTM seasons have been to include contestants who are lesbian, bisexual, plus size, autistic, and twins.” This season, it’s a transgender girl. It seems like Tyra will do anything to boost ratings. 5

In terms of being a role model for young people, she hasn’t decided if that’s the path she’ll take. Isis’s inclusion in the 11th cycle of Top Model has earned the show, and Tyra Banks, high praise. 7
Whether it is for Tyra’s purpose or not, she has tended to show inclusitivity on her shows to date. A more interesting thought may be what a transgender person has to do — conform to the ideas of what a “woman” looks like, or stretch the boundaries and be more gender-queer looking. Since the bottom line is marketablility of a person and if they would be hired as a model, it could go either way. 8
In just a few short weeks, America’s Next Top Model will return for its 11th cycle. The show kicks off on Wednesday, September 3rd, with a special two hour season premiere. 9
