While you’re watching, make notes. If you laugh at something, try and figure out why you’re laughing. What was it that pushed the funny button in your brain? Something to do with the way words were used? Or was it because the joke reminded you of something funny in your own life? Start to watch comedy in a different way. Take it apart and put it back together again. You’ll soon start to notice that the same tricks are applied again and again and again. 2

The first thing to do before you sit down and try and write a sketch, is to watch and read as many other comedy sketches as you can. Go to the library, borrow books, videos, tapes, records, lock yourself away and watch sketches until they come out of your ears. Study the masters of the art. This will help to teach you what is funny, but more importantly it will teach you what has been done before. This is vitally important. What’s the point of writing something new, unless it is original??? 1

Write the titles at the top of three separate pages, and then, working on all three sketches at the same time, write down everything you can think of connected to each of the three subjects. Just lists of words. When all three pages are full, pick the one with what looks like the best comic potential and put it on the top of the pile. You are now going to start writing your first sketch. 4

This is, if you watch the extended version and not the original version, a must have stand-up comedy DVD of a very thought provoking, edgy comic in excellent form. Sane Man is also a must for anyone who has ever wondered why Bill Hicks is still talked about as one of the greats. 3

The shots of Black and Def remaking movies with their ingenious homemade effects are brilliant. The sheer notion that a man in America would not know the lyrics to Ghostbusters is pure comedy. The montage of all their special effects scene is awesome. 5

C) Travel Agency- A man walks into a travel agency to book a trip to Spain. The travel agent informs the man that it is a time travel agency and he can go to anytime in history. The conversation goes back and forth with the time travel agent pitching different eras to the man and the man wanting to go to the modern day Spain. 6

You get the sense that this comes from lengthy personal experience. Hughes has a history of changing course just as everything seems calm and successful. In 1990, he became the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Festival. His surreal show - set in his flat with Samuel Beckett phoning throughout the evening - swiftly became a Channel 4 sitcom and Hughes was on the verge of household name success. 7

He also wrote several important political works, including The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Socialism and Capitalism. 9
