News, Where Have All The Real Men Gone?

Saving the males is an unlikely vocation for a 21st-century woman. Most men don?t know they need saving; most women consider the idea absurd. Then they say something like: ?Are you out of your mind? This is still a male-dominated world. It?s women who need saving. 2

Today, men examine maleness with the same vanity and delight that women have always brought to self-absorption. Fashion mags and goss-groups, body waxing and eyebrow plucking, pink shirts, perfume, a rising suicide rate, falling sperm counts. 4

Actually, that?s a direct quote. The reality is that men already have been screwed ? and not in the way they prefer. For the past 30 years or so, males have been under siege by a culture that too often embraces the notion that men are to blame for all of life?s ills. Males as a group ? not random men ? are bad by virtue of their DNA. 3

Gender trouble was a-bubbling in the TV coverage, with femininity emerging as the preferred metaphor for moderate political views, while manliness was associated with the, uh, hard right. On MSNBC, Chris Matthews could be heard asking Rick Santorum, “Is this a cross-dressing convention?” The meaning of the question was clear even to the famously homophobic senator from Pennsylvania: Was the GOP’s manly core of conservatism donning the Lucite heels and gold lam? gown of false, “feminine” centrism in a disingenuous attempt to win over swing voters? Santorum, of course, denied it. The convention was all man. The selection of speakers from the center of the spectrum?Schwarzenegger, John McCain, Zell Miller?was nothing more than the political equivalent of foreplay, a bouquet of flowers to warm up the American voters for the real macho action: tonight’s and tomorrow night’s speeches by Bush and Cheney. 5

With nearly another million black men in prison or the military, the real imbalance is even greater — a gap of 2.8 million, according to U.S. Census data for 2002. On average, then, there are 26 percent more black women than black men; among whites, women outnumber men by just 8 percent. 6

As with so much about gender, everything about this subject is highly controversial. Some Jewish leaders dispute the statistics, citing contradictory evidence, or pointing to the continuing presence of men at the helm of the biggest community organizations and synagogues. Others question whether a preponderance of women is a problem, or just progress. No one is clear whether the trend, which has only emerged in the last few years, is a temporary phenomenon or a sea change. 7

Male studies scholar and author of A New Psychology of Men, professor Ronald Levant of the University of Akron cites “a crisis of connection between men and women resulting from major structural changes in women’s roles over the last 40 years” (”Why Study Boys and Men?,” 2002). He says this has “shaken traditional masculinity ideology to such an extent there is now a masculinity crisis in which many men feel bewildered and confused, and the pride associated with being a man is lower than at any time in the recent past.” 8

Men — rage-filled by their former roles as sperm donors and human ATMs — would have a newly leveled playing field. Certain of their paternity and masters of their progeny, there would be no more abortions without consent; no more “child support” for kids they never see. 9
