Best known for her roles on The Wonder Years and The West Wing, Danica McKellar is also an internationally recognized mathematician. She was chosen as ABC World News Tonight’s “Person of the Week” for writing Math Doesn’t Suck and has recently been featured in Newsweek and The New York Times, and on the CBS Early Show, and NPR’s Science Friday. 3

A summa cum laude graduate of UCLA with a degree in Mathematics, Danica has been honored in Britain?s esteemed Journal of Physics and The New York Times for her work in mathematics, most notably for her role as co-author of a groundbreaking mathematical physics theorem, which bears her name (The Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem.) Her passion for promoting girls? Since then, Danica has made it a priority to find time in her busy acting schedule to promote math education, often appearing around the country as a speaker at national mathematics conferences. 5

McKellar had a leading role in The Wonder Years, an Emmy Award winning American television Comedy-drama that ran for six seasons on ABC, from 1988 to 1993. The pilot aired on January 31, 1988 after ABC’s coverage of Super Bowl XXII. 6

McKellar played Gwendolyn “Winnie” Cooper, Fred Savage’s main love interest on the show. In an episode entitled “The Accident” and in the final episode, it is stated that every important event in Kevin’s life somehow involved Winnie. She lives on the same block as Kevin. Their first kiss plays an important part of the pilot episode, as does her older brother’s death while serving as a soldier in the Vietnam War. In one episode, her parents decide to get separated because of their grief over the death of their son. According to the epilogue in the final episode, Winnie studies art history in Paris. Kevin and Winnie write one letter to each other every week for eight years until her return. Despite their life-long romance, they never marry. 7

November 14th 2007 - The County of St.Clair, Michigan makes a true committment to girls’ math education, and purchases a copy of Math Doesn’t Suck to EVERY middle school girl in the school system. That’s about 3000 girls). 8
